Liberals love to pretend to care about the poor, and about poor children particularly.
"Protect our children! Ban assault rifles!"
"Rape is an epidemic! We need to teach boys not to be so violent!"
"Poverty is limiting our children! We need to raise taxes for more dependency programs!"
Yes, it's good to be a compassionatel liberal who CARES, DAMMIT!
Even if compassion never saved a child from a gun shot, prevented a rape, or lifted anybody out of poverty.
Even if gun deaths are actually declining steadily, rape and other violent crimes are declining steadily, and there are more people on welfare today than every before.
To liberals, results don't matter; compassion and intention do. And by God, liberals want to protect children and the poor! Unless there's a way to make life a bit more comfortable for livestock. Then, to hell with the children and the poor, because farm animals deserve their dignity.
Which brings us to the latest stupid, dangerous policy from the Left Coast.
Because animal rights activists are upset by the conditions in which chickens are raised, farmers who sell eggs in California- even if their farms are in other states- are being forced to purchase and install and use larger cages. The chickens have been complaining about feeling cramped, apparently. So in addition to the expense of purchasing (or building) and installing the new cages, they're also going to be farming fewer of them- bigger cages means fewer chickens in the same amount of space.
So a small, independent egg farmer in Indiana has to invest in the new facilities and reduce production the same as those in California, simply because the California legislature has been influenced by professional animal rights hucksters and environmentalist agitators.
Leftists don't understand how the economy works, so the actual impact of this new law escaped them during it's creation and passage. Because they're spending more to produce less, farmers will have to raise egg prices. Eggs are a healthy and inexpensive form of protein, which makes them a vital part of a poor family's food budget.
It's at this point in the discussion that liberals stop caring about impoverished children, and place their concern squarely in two areas: protecting the dignity of animals, and punishing farmers. To animal rights loons, it's acceptable for human children to go hungry or malnourished if that's what it takes, because people are no more important than chickens.
Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States, said he believes the costs to consumers will be minimal and worth it for the welfare of chickens, which provide enough eggs for each person to consume on average 250 a year.
Pacelle is paid close to $300,000 annually by the Humane Society, so it's likely the rise in egg prices don't matter much to him. He's not a farmer, so his income won't be affected either.
Liberals care about everybody, equally. Which is to say: not at all.
